Bowman, Hutchison named World Championship Coaches
USA Swimming - USA Swimming November 04, 2008
USA Swimming named Bob Bowman (Baltimore, Md.) and Sean Hutchison (Seattle, Wash.) as head coaches for the 2009 World Championships swim team. In addition, USA Swimming also announced the coaching staffs for the 2009 World University and Junior Pan Pacific Championships.
Bowman will serve as the World Championships men's head coach for the second time, after leading the men's team to record performances at the 2007 World Championships. He is a two-time Olympic assistant coach (2004, 2008), and a three-time World Championships assistant coach (2001, 2003, 2005). Bowman, the former head coach of Club Wolverine and the University of Michigan, recently relocated to Baltimore where he serves as head coach of the North Baltimore Aquatic Club.
Hutchison will make his first women's head coach appearance at the 2009 World Championships. Most recently, he served as assistant woman's coach for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Swim Team, and was also an assistant coach at the 2007 World Championships. Hutchison is the head coach for King Aquatics based in Seattle, Wash.
"Bob [Bowman] and Sean [Hutchison] are two of the best coaches in the nation, and, I believe, the world," said Mark Schubert, USA Swimming's National Team head coach and general manager. "One needs only to look at the performances of their athletes at the 2008 Olympic Games and in previous international meets to see evidence of their superb coaching."
The head coach for the men's team at the 2009 Junior Pan Pacific Championships will be SwimMac's David Marsh (Charlotte, N.C.). Bluefish Swim Club's Chuck Batchelor will serve as the women's head coach. The competition will take place in Guam, January 8-12. Both Marsh and Batchelor placed swimmers on the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team. Assistant women's coaches for the team will include Mission Viejo Nadadores head coach Bill Rose (Mission Viejo, Calif.), Kathy Aspaas (Minot, N.D.) and Paul Stafford (Concord, Calif.). Assistant men's coaches for the team are North Baltimore's Paul Yetter (Baltimore, Md.), Roric Fink (Tucson, Ariz.) and Brian King (Grantham, N.H.).
The 2009 World University Games U.S. coaching staff will include women's head coach Steve Bultman (College Station, Texas) and men's head coach Mark Bernardino (Charlottesville, Va.). Matt Kredich (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Gregg Wilson (Santa Barbara, Calif.) will serve as the women's assistant coaches, while Ray Loose (Bloomington, Ind.) and Tim Murphy (Boston, Mass.) will be the men's assistant coaches. The competition will take place in Belgrade, Serbia, July 5-11.
"The coaches who work with our young athletes at the World University Games and Junior Pan Pacifics, play an integral role in the development of USA Swimming's most outstanding young talent," said Schubert. "By putting experienced and successful coaches in key roles with our young teams, we are providing the athletes with the best possible foundation for their continued international success."
